Frequently Asked Questions
Questions About Getting Started
How do I submit my book idea?
You may submit a proposal, sample chapters, or a full manuscript through our contact form. We will confirm receipt and follow up with any questions after our initial review.
Do you accept agent submissions?
Yes. We welcome submissions from literary agents, including select fiction and nonfiction projects.
Do you publish fiction?
While our core focus is on cookbooks, lifestyle, and nonfiction, we do consider select fiction—especially when submitted by literary agents or when the project aligns with our brand and production strengths.
Do you publish all books submitted?
We are unable to publish every submission. Our review process considers editorial quality, market potential, production feasibility, and alignment with our publishing strengths. Any editorial concerns and questions will be discussed during evaluation.
Publishing Model & Contracts
Is this self-publishing?
No. 83 Press is a full-service publisher. We guide you through every stage of the process—editing, design, photography, layout, printing, marketing support, and distribution. You are never on your own. View our list of services here.
What is the difference between publishing and packaging?
Publishing means 83 Press funds and produces the book. Packaging is a turnkey service where the author, brand, or organization invests in production while we manage editing, photography, design, and finished files. Both models follow the same creative and production standards.
What does a contract look like?
Each contract is customized for the project. Agreements may include grant of rights, subsidiary rights, delivery and acceptance, publication details, copyright, royalties, and out-of-print provisions.
Who owns the copyright?
In most cases, 83 Press will retain the copyright. All rights and licensing terms will be clearly outlined in your contract.
Questions About Production & Creative Process
What formats do you offer?
We publish premium full-color hardcover and softcover editions and offer a wide range of cover styles, finishes such as debossing and foil, paper types, trim sizes, and binding options.
Do you format the book?
Yes. We manage the full layout and design process, ensuring the fonts, styles, and structure best support your content. You will approve final pages before printing.
Do you create the cover?
Yes. Our design team presents cover concepts based on your content and aesthetic preferences. You will review and approve the final design.
Can you help me develop my concept if I’m not sure where to start?
Absolutely. We assist with concept development, content structure, and establishing the creative vision before writing or photography begins. We’re here to help you with any questions you might have.
Can I bring my own photographer or designer?
Yes. We’re happy to collaborate with external creatives as long as their work meets our production standards. You may also choose to work with our in-house teams.
Do you offer packaging services for brands or organizations?
Yes. We work with companies, municipalities, universities, designers, photographers, restaurants and influencers to create custom books for brand storytelling, marketing, heritage preservation, or fundraising.
Can you reprint an existing book?
Yes. We can assist with reprints, rights-reversion editions, updated designs, refreshed photography, anniversary editions, or reconstructing files—depending on the rights you hold.
Timeline & Workflow
How long does it take to publish a book?
Most projects take nine to fifteen months from contract to finished books. Timelines vary based on manuscript length, photography needs, design complexity, print run size, and production schedules. All timing will be discussed and outlined in your agreement.
Questions About Marketing, Distribution & Sales
Do you handle marketing?
We provide strategic marketing support including digital campaigns, email marketing, social media promotion, and media outreach through trusted partners. Authors are encouraged to activate their own audiences for maximum success.
Will my book be sold in bookstores?
We support distribution through trade bookstores, specialty retailers, Amazon, and direct-to-consumer channels. The distribution strategy is determined during project planning.
Can I order books for events or signings?
Yes. Authors may order books at a discounted rate, and we can help coordinate larger orders for launches, conferences, corporate events, and more.
Author Support & Royalties
What do you offer authors?
Authors receive hands-on support and direct access to our editorial, creative, and leadership teams. We treat every author as part of the 83 Press family and are committed to the success of each project.
Do authors get a discount on books?
Yes. Discounted author pricing is included in your contract and available for personal orders, events, and signings.
What are the typical royalties and when are they paid?
Royalties are paid every six months, accompanied by an itemized statement detailing copies sold, returns, and any reserves held. Rates and payment terms are specified in your contract.
